Húbert Nói Jóhannesson graduated from the Contemporary Art Department of the Iceland School of Art and Crafts in 1987, he studied science at the University of Iceland and during his student years worked on geological research in the highlands of Iceland, and signs of this can be seen in many places in his work. Locations have been his main focus for most of his career.
